For a while now I have watched, discussed, chronicled, and blogged about Hip Hop. As an eighties baby, Hip Hop and I have grown up together and, therefore, it is a part of my life and influenced a lot of who I am. But the bigger reason that I write about Hip Hop is because Hip Hop is a culture: a sub-culture of American culture.

All sub-cultures are microcosms of the larger culture in which they exist. So I use Hip Hop as a barometer for American culture. If want to know the truth about a culture, look at the sub-cultures. They are the hardest hit by major cultural changes. They are the first to feel the shift in the winds when change comes…and a change is coming.

I LOVE BOOKS!

I often read for leisure.  In such a chaotic world, it helps to be able to escape for a moment.  That’s what books do for me.  They provide solace.  In the past, I would turn to books in order to escape my current circumstance using my imagination to travel far, far away.  In the past, I would read so vigorously that at times I would complete a fairly lengthy book in one day.  Over the years, I have come across books that I really enjoy, many of which I have read more than once.  In no particular order, they include:

• Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine by Bebe Moore Campbell
• Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
• Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
• The Saints and the Aints by T. M. Franklin-Hall
• If I Ruled the World by Joy
• Sweet Summer Growing Up With and Without My Dad by Bebe Moore Campbell

There are many other books that I enjoy. I just cannot think of them at the moment.  What are your thoughts about these books?  What are your favorite books?

Attention all fashion lovers! I want to share with you my recent discovery of a very talented clothing designer, Dennise M. Vera.  As per usual, I discovered her amazing work via Instagram, and I am glad that I did.  The inspiration for her clothing originated from the Nazca Lines which are ancient motifs in Peru.  If I were to describe her clothing in three words, they would be: intricate, non-traditional, and AMAZING.  Vera creates high-quality, high-end pieces, and -get this- the pieces are made to measure.  Clearly, these are not typical pieces.  This is absolute art, and I look forward to the revelations of her future creations.

What is White guilt?

I don’t know what White guilt is, but I do know that it is a different experience for different people. I don’t feel that I carry White guilt anymore, but yes I did at one time, and more on that later. I am proud of my Irish, English, Scottish, Welsh, German, Polish, and 22-25% of *inconclusive heritage. Unfortunately I was raised in a household without too many customs relating back to any one culture. I feel a deep loss because of this, but its probably because we are so muddled with different European bloodlines that there is not really one culture that could dominate in my family. Some…
